20 in 30 challenge | february - liver support

20 in 30 challenge | february's challenge will be supporting the liver. | realfoodsimple.com

Each month I will be doing a different 20 in 30 challenge:
doing something healthy for 20 out of 30 days of the month.

February I decided to focus on liver support.

The liver is the main organ in our body responsible for detoxing. It filters and processes nutrients, hormones, toxins, pesticides, medicines, alcohol. It has quite an important job. In fact, after you eat, and all your food has been broken down into the nutrients, those nutrients go into the blood stream. But before they get to go all the tissues in your body, they first make a pit stop in the liver. The liver than filters and processes them and then shuttles those nutrients out to the body.

(yes, this is just a very rudimentary explanation, for more info you can buy this* :) )

Why I am not calling it a liver detox

Our bodies have the ability to detox themselves. Like I said before, that is the job of the liver (among other organs). So instead of trying to find products to detox the body, it is more important to support your body so it can do the detoxing itself. By supporting the liver with nourishing foods you will ensure that it can keep doing it's job for a long time.

The 20 in 30 liver support challenge

These are the key items I will be doing 20 out of the 30 days to support my liver. All of these things will be done on the 20 days. If I only do 3 out the 4 then it doesn't count.

  • No alcohol - Most likely I will treat myself on Friday and Saturday night
  • Lemon water first thing in the morning - I usually do this with lemon juice, but I think I am going to start trying lemon essential oil
  • Milk Thistle/Dandelion - I am combining these. They are both great for supporting the liver. The reason I am giving myself the choice is because sometimes I might have tea, sometimes a capsule, or I might want to change it up with a dandelion salad. As long as I get one of these herbs in each of the 20 days I will count it.
  • Tumeric - I have no idea yet how I will use this. I am not a big fan, but it is a great spice for supporting the liver. And it will force me to be creative. Plus I have a bottle of tumeric in my spice cabinet that never gets used. I might as well give it a purpose.

Again this is what I have chosen to do for my 20 in 30 challenge. If you want to challenge yourself, and I highly recommend you do, then pick something that fits your lifestyle and goals. And share it...through Instagram, email, Facebook, comment below, or share it with friends.

*No I don't really expect you to buy that, but I have been referencing it a lot lately to refresh my nutrition knowledge and make sure the things I remember I am remembering them correctly.
